In 1960 Szász received a commission to document the rapidly disappearing folk architecture of Hungary due to the modernisation efforts of the Socialist regime. For the next 16 years he travelled to over a 150 villages with the architect János Szigetvári, documenting crumbling adobe and clay, saving the last testaments to a dying tradition. His sensitive use of tonality and his unrelenting strive for composition and perspective meet here to great effect.
