Ákos Ezer graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2014. His unmistakably energetic, colourful and grotesque paintings have been exhibited in various places such as the Tanja Pol Galerie in Munich or Beers London in the framework of an international group show introducing young talents to the public. Art+Text Budapest presents the next solo exhibition of Ákos Ezer, showcasing a selection of artworks from the past couple of years.

 

The paintings exhibited in Accidentally, ranging in size from 25 centimeters-wide to 2.5 meters-wide, centre around the image of the fallen man. In Ezer's consistent painterly universe this fall is not a tragic or mythical occurence, like that of Icarus, but a burlesque-like and entertaining grotesque misstep. Ezer’s heroes are everyday figures, sturdy guys and lanky men, who fall in a way that their twisted limbs arrange themselves into dynamic compositions filling out the rectangular surface of the canvas.  They wear shorts and flip-flops, dotted or striped T-shirts, and are surrounded by weekend houses, DIY sheds and tools. Ákos Ezer immerses himself in the nostalgic world of childhood vacations spent by the lakeside by building an autonomous pictorial space from the patchwork effect of abstract surfaces. The expressively formed grotesque figures are affixed to a striped or gradient background. While Ezer’s surrealistic childhood universe is related to the personal-mythological narrational style of the Leipzig School, his astoundingly energetic brushwork and his clean colours, often squeezed onto the canvas straigth from the tube, are reminiscent of the unbridled energy flow of New Painting.
