MAGDALENA ABAKANOWICZ (1930 - 2017)
Brothers
2010

burlap, resin

225x125x65 cm

Magdalena Abakanowicz created a series of hybrids, beings with a human body and an animal head. Brothers consists two figures that combine the shapes of human bodies with animal heads. Each character is different, has its own individual features and a mysterious name.

The creations are to connect the human world with the animal kingdom and nature. As the artist emphasized, they have many identical features: spirit, sensitivity, and an intuition of existence at a specific time in space. What makes them different is the perception of reality. According to Magdalena Abakanowicz, animals are characterized by an impenetrable knowledge of existence that cannot be penetrated by humans.

"Animal heads wear human bodies. Human bodies are armed with animal heads. Partly human, partly animal figures demonstrate an imaginary common being between heads unknown to the body and bodies which do not know the heads that belong to them. There is no agreement between them. There is no common verbal language or a compatible gesture system."
